Fantastic first season for South Pembs Sharks

Our local girls rugby hub have had a fantastic first season as the South Pembs Sharks. They have trained weekly since March and played in a variety of festivals over the Spring and Summer months.

They have learnt, practised and perfected many new skills; made lifelong friends; worked as a team; played with a smile on their faces; and have definitely embraced their inner Shark!

“Watching the girls improve over the season has been incredible,” reports Rachel Grieve, hub lead.

“All of our teams have had new challenges this season: Our U9s have introduced the game to new younger girls; our U11s have learnt to play contact rugby; our U13s, who started off with just four players, have had eight new players join our hub and have embraced the game successfully; the U15s have worked at more technical parts of the game and have used their determination and skills to win the majority of their games. Every team has made improvements on last year - the girls just love it!”

The huge success of this hub is down to the commitment, determination, talent and the willingness to learn, that these girls show week in week out. Their coaches Fletcher, Tyenne, Sian, Ross, Leila, Gemma, Joe, Tim, Aled, Tom and Jamie, plan and carry out a huge variety of activities that not only teach the girls the sport, but are also fun and engaging.

Jamie, coach of the U15s, says “It is such a pleasure to coach a great bunch of girls who are hard working and passionate about this sport. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for these Sharks.”

The new kit, sponsored by Ty Francis at New York Welsh, has been admired by many fellow rugby enthusiasts, but more importantly it has given the girls their identity, pride, and has united them together as one rugby family. We are hugely grateful to Ty’s generosity and we wish his new initiative www.sponsorourclub.org success.

We now look forward to our presentation evening and our trip to Parc y Scarlets in the next couple of months. We would like to thank the coaches, the parents for their support, and all of the volunteers who have helped us over the season, especially Maria Taylor who gives up her time to carry out behind the scenes work. We also thank Tenby United RFC for their support, being the host club.
